The past 20 years has seen South Africa transform from an autocratic, dictatorial and apartheid state to one of the world’s most stable democracies, heavily entrenching individual and communal human rights, religious pluralism and the integration of communities. The past 2 decades have catapulted South Africa as a world leader in business, technology and legislative progress, boasting one of the world’s most comprehensive constitutions.

However, with all these positive changes, we are still left to battle the scourge of poverty, inequality and the remnants of social injustices that plague our country. Within this context, as a Muslim community that has been very active in the liberation struggles, we need to recommit ourselves to the eradication of these social ills. One such strategy is the development of the Waqf system as a means for sustainable and viable community development.

Reinvent Rediscover Revolutionise

Awqaf SA is an independent non-profit organisation founded for the social, economic, political, educational, intellectual, moral, religious, and spiritual empowerment of Muslim and historically disadvantaged communities. We aim to contribute meaningfully towards the growth and development of post-apartheid South Africa through the initiation and/or support of strategically focused and sustainable community development and poverty alleviation projects.

We are committed to becoming a broad-based, inclusive, community development agency that encourages self-reliance among the communities it serves. In all our activities and programmes we will strive to adhere to a high standard of fairness, ethics, integrity, and
professionalism, and foster mutual respect and understanding among the diverse cultures, faiths, and peoples of our country. Central to our mission is the mobilisation of community capital and community re-investment.
