Mitchell’s Plain, South Africa – The JP21 Foundation, established by former South African cricket captain, JP Duminy, has partnered with community NGO Awqaf SA through its Share the Care campaign and corporate sponsor, GILL shampoo. This to support the JP21 Foundation’s youth development project which is aimed at empowering underprivileged learners in the Mitchell’s Plain area through cricket.

The project, which began in 2015, is focused on providing opportunities for youngsters in underprivileged communities to participate in cricket and develop their skills and confidence, on and off the field.

The JP21 Foundation’s youth development project offers coaching, equipment, and facilities to enable students to learn and play cricket in a safe and supportive environment.
Awqaf SA, which has been running the annual Awqaf SA Youth Cricket Tournament for several years, has partnered with the JP21 Foundation to expand the reach of their youth development projects that use sport as a vehicle to promote social cohesion and instill values of social justice in young players.

JP Duminy, founder of the JP21 Foundation, said, “We believe that cricket can be a powerful tool to bring about
positive change in the community, and through this project, we hope to provide opportunities for underprivileged
students to participate in the sport and develop important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience.”

The project has had a significant impact on the students involved, with many experiencing personal growth and
development through their participation in the program.
Awqaf SA Deputy CEO, Mickaeel Collier, said, “We are proud to support the JP21 Foundation’s youth development
project and partner with them to create positive change in the lives of underprivileged students in the Mitchell’s
Plain area. We believe that sports can be a powerful vehicle for social change and are committed to working
together to promote social cohesion and youth development through cricket.”

Mohammed Saloojee spokesperson for GILL shampoo said that supporting the upliftment programme of such an
iconic figure as JP Duminy was an easy decision.
“We are delighted to partner with the JP21 Foundation & Awqaf. We believe that
sports can bring people together and help foster a sense of community. Our aim is to help young players achieve their full potential and create a brighter future for themselves and their families. For it to be effective, corporate social responsibility has to address socio-economic issues at the grassroots level. So, we are proud at GILL to support the endeavours of JP,” he said. All the sponsors and partners to the JP21 Foundation’s youth development project see it as a testament to the power of sports to create positive change and empower young people to reach their full potential. The Foundation, Awqaf SA and GILL are committed to continuing this work and expanding access to opportunities for underprivileged learners in South Africa.
