Project 21 - Awqaf SA

Project-21

Project 21 is a joint venture project between Awqaf SA, Sanzaf and VOC (Voice of the Cape).

A two week nominations process was initiated by VOC (Voice of the Cape) on air, via email and via Social Media, in which the community were afforded the opportunity to nominate a worthy Masjid. View this page to find out more about the nomination process that was conducted by VOC – click here

A total of 53 Masjids were nominated by the community. The criteria for selection for Project 21was as follows:

The Masjid has to to be in an underprivileged area.
It was preferred if the Masjid was in an emerging Muslim community.
The community had no or had very little access other sources of funding or income.

A short listing process based on the above criteria was started after nominations closed. Those that did not make the final list were not eligible due to a lack of fulfilling the above criteria and also the fact that some requested funds for water and electricity bills.

The final list was determined by the partner organisations.

The process that followed the final selection list was as follows:

A task team consisting of Quantity Surveyors, Architects and Builders was established.
A building survey and questionnaire was developed to assess and survey the selected sites in a detailed way.
A final report on each Masjid has been produced.

Insha’allah, this is the first of many years that we will be running this project and next year or even later in this in this year once the Waqf returns replenish itself we will be able to do extra Masjids.

The idea is that we develop these Masjids in a sustainable way over the next 5 years Insha’allah.
